Breaking Free from Past Grudges:

 A Biblical Approach

Holding onto grudges can feel justified, especially when we’ve been deeply hurt. However, grudges keep us trapped in bitterness, while forgiveness sets us free. The Bible teaches that letting go of resentment is not only an act of obedience but also a path to inner peace. Here’s how we can release past grudges through God’s Word.

1. Acknowledge the Hurt but Don’t Dwell on It

Ecclesiastes 3:1, 3 – “There is a time for everything… a time to heal.”

It’s okay to feel hurt, but we must not let it define us. Holding onto grudges only prolongs the pain. Healing starts when we acknowledge the hurt but choose to move forward.

2. Recognize That Holding Grudges Hurts You More

Hebrews 12:15 – “See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

Bitterness is like a poison—it damages our heart, steals our joy, and affects our relationships. Letting go is not about excusing the wrong but about freeing ourselves from the weight of resentment.

3. Trust God to Bring Justice

Deuteronomy 32:35 – “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Sometimes, we hold onto grudges because we want justice. But God is the ultimate judge. We can trust Him to deal with the situation fairly while we release the burden of revenge.

4. Forgive as You Have Been Forgiven

Matthew 6:14-15 – “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

God calls us to forgive because He has forgiven us. Forgiveness is not a feeling—it’s a decision to obey God and let His grace work in our hearts.

5. Replace Bitterness with Love

Romans 12:20-21 – “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

One of the most powerful ways to break free from grudges is to respond with love. This doesn’t mean allowing toxic people to continue hurting us, but it does mean choosing to bless instead of curse, pray instead of resent, and love instead of hate.

Remember This

Letting go of grudges is an act of faith. It’s trusting that God is our healer, our defender, and our peace. When we forgive, we step into the freedom that Christ has given us.

Prayer for Letting Go.

Heavenly Father,

I bring my pain before You and ask for healing. I choose to forgive those who have wronged me, not because they deserve it, but because You have called me to live in freedom. Lord, take away any bitterness in my heart and fill me with Your peace. Help me to trust You to bring justice in Your perfect way. Thank You for Your love and grace. Teach me to walk in forgiveness daily and to reflect Your heart in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.🙏
