5-Year-Old Vicksburg Boy Hailed as Hero After Saving Family From Devastating House Fire

VICKSBURG, MS — A family in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is calling their 5-year-old son a true hero after his quick and brave actions saved their lives from a devastating house fire that completely destroyed their home.

The Real Rescue: Young Ranajai Hill was sitting on the couch early in the morning watching TV when he noticed flames and intense heat spreading from a nearby gas space heater. Instead of panicking or hiding—as many young children do—Ranajai immediately sprang into action. He ran to wake his grandmother, Jennifer Smith, and alerted her to the spreading fire.

Lives Saved: Inside the house at the time were Ranajai, his little sister, his grandmother, and his two uncles. Thanks to the 5-year-old's fast actions and awareness, all five family members managed to escape safely in the clothes they were wearing just before the Vicksburg Fire Department arrived.

A Grateful Family: The fire completely leveled the home, making the loss incredibly hard for the family. However, his grandmother stressed that the situation could have been a tragedy if not for Ranajai. "Without him being the brave hero he was, it could have been worse. I don’t even want to explain," Smith told local reporters. Though described as a shy and soft-spoken boy, Ranajai's courage and care for his family have inspired the entire local community.

A local GoFundMe has been established to help the family replace their lost clothing and essentials as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.
