"I Couldn't Just Leave Them": Pizza Delivery Driver Runs Into Blazing Home, Saves Five Children

LAFAYETTE, IN — A 25-year-old pizza delivery driver is being hailed as a national hero after his split-second decision to run into a completely engulfed house fire saved the lives of five sleeping children.

The Desperate Rescue: Nicholas Bostic was driving his normal delivery route late at night when he spotted a two-story home engulfed in flames. Bostic realized he didn’t have his phone to call 911, so he slammed on his brakes, ran around to the back of the house, and kicked the door open. He charged into the smoke-filled home, shouting to see if anyone was inside.

He found four young siblings, ranging in age from 1 to 18, sleeping upstairs and quickly guided them outside to safety. However, the teens frantically told him that their 6-year-old sister was still trapped inside the burning house.

Back Into the Flames: Without hesitation, Bostic ran back into the inferno. The smoke was so thick he had to wrap his shirt around his mouth. He searched the upstairs bedrooms, crawling on his hands and knees until he found the little girl hiding near a bed. With the stairs now completely blocked by fire, Bostic punched out a second-story window, grabbed the child, and jumped. He twisted his body mid-air to ensure he took the brunt of the fall and protected the 6-year-old.

The Aftermath: Bodycam footage from arriving police officers showed a severely injured Bostic carrying the child to safety, immediately asking, "Is the baby okay?" He was airlifted to a hospital and treated for severe smoke inhalation and deep cuts on his arm, but the 6-year-old was completely unharmed.

"His selfless action is nothing short of heroic," the Lafayette Police Department said in a statement. "Nicholas Bostic went above and beyond what anyone could have asked of him." A GoFundMe set up by his family to cover his medical bills raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from inspired strangers across the country.
