Merry Christmas Jay": Hero Mechanic Saves 24 Stranded Strangers from Deadly Buffalo Blizzard

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY — A local mechanic is being celebrated as a guardian angel after his extraordinary efforts saved the lives of 24 people and two dogs during a historic, deadly winter blizzard that paralyzed the Buffalo area.

Stranded in the Storm: Jay Withey, 27, found himself trapped in his truck as whiteout conditions and rapidly dropping temperatures stranded hundreds of motorists. After spending the night helping others dig out, Withey's truck ran out of gas. Knowing that staying in freezing vehicles would mean certain death for the stranded families around him, he made a desperate, life-saving decision.

Breaking in to Save Lives: Withey trudged through waist-deep snow to the nearby EDGE Academy. Finding the doors locked, he smashed a single window to gain entry. He then spent the next several hours braving the howling winds, walking from car to car in the blinding snow, and carrying elderly people and children back to the heated school.

In total, he gathered 24 strangers and two dogs into the building. He found the school's kitchen, broke the lock on the cafeteria door, and secured apples, cereal, and water for everyone. They spent Christmas Eve together on gym mats, safe from the freezing temperatures that tragically claimed several lives outside.

The Famous Note: Before leaving the next morning when the storm broke, Withey left a handwritten note on a whiteboard apologizing for the damage. It read: "I’m terribly sorry about breaking the school window and for breaking in the kitchen. Got stuck at 8 pm Friday and slept in my truck with two strangers... I had to do it to save everyone and get them shelter and food and a bathroom. Merry Christmas — Jay."

The Cheektowaga Police Department later shared a photo of the note, calling Withey a hero and asking the public to help identify "Merry Christmas Jay." When they finally found him, the police chief stated, "His selfless actions saved over two dozen people from freezing to death. He is a true hero."
