New Identity Theft Alert: Police Warn Against "Unclaimed $200 Gift Card" Mailer Scams

 NATIONWIDE — Authorities are issuing a high-priority warning regarding a sophisticated new mail fraud scheme targeting thousands of households. Residents are reporting receiving official-looking envelopes claiming they have an "Unclaimed $200 Gift Card" waiting for them.

The scam utilizes a "Social Engineering" tactic where a prominent QR code is printed on the card. Cybersecurity experts confirm that scanning this code directs users to a mirrored site designed to harvest Social Security numbers and bank login credentials. In some cases, the QR code triggers a background download of malicious "spyware" onto the user's smartphone.

"This is not a simple marketing ploy; it is a direct attempt at total identity takeover," stated a spokesperson for the Cybercrime Division. Citizens are urged to shred these mailers immediately and never scan QR codes from unsolicited sources.
