Pediatric Surgeons Issue Emergency Alert Over Rising "Laundry Pod" Eye Chemical Burns
CHICAGO, IL — A disturbing spike in pediatric emergency room visits has led to a nationwide safety alert regarding concentrated laundry detergent pods. Unlike traditional liquid detergent, these pods are under high pressure and encased in water-soluble film that can burst violently when squeezed.
Medical data shows that toddlers, often mistaking the colorful pods for candy, are suffering permanent corneal damage. When a pod is squeezed by a small child, the concentrated alkaline chemicals can spray directly into the eye at high velocity, causing immediate tissue necrosis.
"We are seeing cases of permanent blindness that could have been prevented with simple storage changes," says Dr. Sarah Jenkins. Experts recommend switching to traditional liquid detergent or keeping all pod-based products in high, locked cabinets out of the reach and sight of children.
