Police Issue Urgent Warning: "Invisible" Gift Card Scam Draining Funds Before You Even Leave the Store
NATIONWIDE ALERT — Law enforcement agencies and major retailers across the country are issuing severe warnings to shoppers about a highly sophisticated new scam that is completely draining gift cards before they are even gifted.
How the Scam Works: Thieves are walking into large retail stores like Target, Walmart, and local pharmacies, and taking handfuls of unactivated gift cards off the racks. They then print their own counterfeit barcode stickers—which are linked to the scammer's personal accounts—and meticulously place them perfectly over the real barcodes on the back of the store's gift cards.
The thieves then quietly return the tampered cards to the store racks. When an unsuspecting customer picks up the card to purchase it as a birthday or holiday present, the cashier or the customer at the self-checkout scans the fake barcode.
The customer pays $50 or $100, thinking they just loaded the gift card. In reality, the money is instantly deposited into the scammer's account.
The Tragic Result: The customer walks out of the store with a completely worthless piece of plastic. The scam is usually only discovered weeks later when the recipient tries to use their gift, only to be told by the store that the card has a $0 balance. By then, the scammers are long gone with the cash, and most stores refuse to issue a refund because the transaction wasn't linked to their actual card.
How to Protect Yourself: Police are urging all consumers to strictly inspect the back of any gift card before purchasing. Gently run your finger over the barcode. If it feels like a raised sticker, or if the packaging looks tampered with or slightly torn, do not buy it. Experts recommend purchasing gift cards online directly from the retailer or choosing cards kept behind the customer service desk.
