Police Uncover "Invisible" Bluetooth Skimmers Embedded Inside Gas Pumps
HOUSTON, TX — Law enforcement agencies have discovered a new generation of credit card skimmers that are virtually impossible for consumers to detect visually. Unlike traditional "overlay" skimmers, these new devices are small Bluetooth chips installed internally within the pump’s wiring.
Thieves can remain parked up to 100 feet away and wirelessly collect credit card data and ZIP codes as customers pay for fuel. Because the device is internal, the security seal on the pump often remains unbroken.
To protect yourself, police suggest using your phone's Bluetooth settings to scan for devices while at the pump. If you see a device with a long, randomized string of letters and numbers that refuses to pair, it may be a skimmer. Experts also recommend using "Tap-to-Pay" or paying inside the station to bypass the reader entirely.
